Benefits of Shea for the Asian Cosmetic Industry and Impact on Women Empowerment
For centuries, communities across Sub Saharan Africa have used shea in many aspects of daily life from beauty regimen to food preparation, home remedies and cultural ceremonies. Since the last decade, Shea has been gaining a growing international recognition as a versatile, high functioning cosmetic ingredient. Its relatively high quantities of unsaponifiables and triterpene esters delivers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Currently a top 20 ingredient used in new product launches, shea is utilized 300% more times as an emollient than any other vegetable oil. It’s social and environmental profile is contributing to its growing preference by international cosmetic brands. So how can this ingredient, that supports the livelihoods of millions of rural African women contribute to the Asian cosmetic industry and its consumers’ demand for natural, functional and innovative products?
